Proposal

Rationale

In Your Street, Your Say - Group B Stage 1, we heard that some car drivers use Gillies St to avoid traffic on Station St. Gillies St is designed to be used mostly by local traffic.

Restricting car drivers from turning left from Heidelberg Rd will reduce non-local traffic on Gillies St during the afternoon peak, on Monday to Friday between 4:00pm and 6:30pm. People riding bikes will be allowed to turn left at this intersection at all times.

Heidelberg Rd is an arterial road managed by the Victorian Government. We will need to apply to the Department of Transport and Planning to make a change at the intersection of Heidelberg Rd and Gillies St. This project, and details such as the timing of the turn restriction, depend on approval from the Department of Transport and Planning.

We will review this project after 12 months. We will assess whether there is less non-local traffic on Gillies St and check for impacts on surrounding streets. Depending on the results of the review, the project could be made permanent, removed, or altered.

More projects to reduce non-local traffic on Gillies St are proposed in Operational Project: Gillies St and Darebin Rd intersection, and Operational Project: Separation St and Gillies St intersection.
