Spring Street, Reservoir

This section of the trail connects to the Northern Pipe Trail. This section of the trail needs safe crossings over both the Mernda railway line and Spring Street. Because Spring Street is a fast, busy road, a new signalized crossing is required.

We are asking for your feedback on four possible route options, specifically the impact they have on Spring Street.

Council's preferred option is option 1 (yellow).

The 4 options and their impact on Spring Street

  • Option 1- Butters street crossing (yellow)

    Pedestrian crossing at Butters St, crossing the rail line at Crawley St.

    Advantages:

    • Shorter distance riding with cars
    • Good connection to community trail and Northern Pipe Trail.
    • New signalised crossing on Spring Street sits convenient distance from existing crossing between Cameron Street and Verdun Grove.

    Disadvantages:

    • New rail crossing needed.
    • Butters Street becomes exit only at Spring Street; only left turns allowed.
  • Option 2- Butters street crossing (blue)

    Advantages:

    • Uses existing rail crossing.
    • New Spring Street signals sits convenient distance from existing crossing between Cameron street and Verdun Grove improve access north.

    Disadvantages:

    • Bike riders to access railway crossing via right of way
    • Less direct connection between new trail and Northern Pipe Trail
    • Butters Street becomes exit‑only at Spring Street; only left hand turns allowed.
    • More on‑road bike riding.
  • Option 3- Powell street crossing (orange)

    Advantages:

    • Uses existing rail crossing.
    • Good connection between community trail and Northern Pipe Trail.

    Disadvantages:

    • New Spring Street signal crossing is close to existing signalised crossing (between Cameron Street and Verdun Grove)
    • Left turn only from Powell Street onto Spring Street
    • Petrol station on Powell Street complicates movement.
    • More on road riding
  • Option 4- Frankston street crossing (green)

    Advantages:

    • New signalised crossing sits a convenient distance from the existing crossing between Cameron Street and Verdun Grove

    Disadvantages:

    • New rail pedestrian crossing needed.
    • Requires construction of a new shared path for this to be legal for all bike riders.
    • Frankston Street will become exit only at Spring Street and only left hand turns onto Spring Street permitted.
