Rationale

Dundas St is a strategic cycling corridor that connects the St Georges Road Shared Path to the Darebin Creek Trail. Local destinations on this section of Dundas St include Thornbury High School and Penders Grove Primary School. Between Victoria St and Station St there is a painted, on-road bike lane. East of Station Street there is a shared parking and bike lane.

In Your Street, Your Say - Group B Stage 1 we heard people who ride bikes do not feel safe on Dundas St, between Victoria St and Matisi St. Riding next to parked cars puts people at risk of being hit by car drivers pulling in and out of parking bays, and people opening car doors into the bike lane. East of Station St cars are often parked in the shared parking and bike lane, meaning bike riders need to share a lane with car drivers.

This project will investigate options for separated bike lanes on Dundas St. This includes the feasibility and impacts of removing on-street car parking spaces between Victoria St and Matisi St. The findings of the investigation will inform the design of separated bike lanes on Dundas St. We will seek further community feedback before making any changes to Dundas St.

Separated bike lanes would make traveling on Dundas St safer for people who ride bikes and help encourage more people in Darebin to ride by connecting important cycling routes.
