Proposal

Rationale

Fairfield Rd is a very narrow road, and a popular route for children walking and riding bikes to Fairfield Primary School. We previously made the section of Fairfield Rd between Wingrove St and Langridge St one-way only, with all traffic (including cars and bikes) only allowed to go south. This change was in response to concerns raised by Fairfield Primary School and made it safer for children to walk and ride on Fairfield Rd on their way to school.

In Your Street, Your Say - Group B Stage 1, we heard the existing one-way section was generally supported and considered to improve safety on Fairfield Rd, and some wanted it extended.

This change means all road traffic, including cars and bikes, will only be allowed to go south on Fairfield Rd, between Gordon St and Wingrove St. This means:

  • No right turn from Langridge St onto Fairfield Rd at all times, for all road traffic

The proposal to extend the one-way on Fairfield Rd from Langridge St to Gordon St will mean some trips for people driving and riding bikes will be less convenient.

Extending the one-way on Fairfield Rd will improve safety for all people using the road, and especially children walking or riding a bike to Fairfield Primary School.

We will review this project after 12 months. We will assess whether Fairfield Rd is safer for people driving, walking, and riding bikes, and check for impacts on surrounding streets. Depending on the results of the review, the project could be made permanent, removed, or altered.
