Proposal

  • Install a traffic island in the middle of Victoria Rd at Mitchell St
  • Upgrade the lights of the signalised pedestrian crossing on Victoria Rd, north of Mitchell St

Rationale

In Your Street, Your Say - Group B Stage 1, we heard the intersection of Victoria Rd and Mitchell St was dangerous for people who walk and ride bikes. You told us that some car drivers do not stop for people crossing at the traffic light and turn over the bike lanes. This intersection can also be difficult and unsafe for people driving cars, and there is a history of car crashes.

The proposed new traffic island will change how car drivers can move between Victoria Rd and Mitchell St:

  • No right turn when heading north on Victoria Rd into Mitchell St
  • No right turn when heading south on Victoria Rd into Mitchell St
  • No right turn when heading east on Mitchell St into Victoria Rd
  • No right turn when heading west on Mitchell St into Victoria Rd
  • Drivers on Mitchell St will have to turn left or right at Victoria Rd, they will not be able to go straight through

The proposed new traffic island means some trips may be a little less convenient for some car drivers. The traffic island will include cut-throughs for bikes. This means people riding bikes will be able to go in any direction at the intersection.

The traffic island will make the intersection of Victoria Rd and Mitchell St safer for all people using the road- driving, walking, or riding a bike.

The proposal also includes upgrades to the traffic lights in the signalised crossing on Victoria Rd, north of Mitchell St. This will make the crossing safer.
