“Mayer Park is a welcoming and inclusive space offering a range of experiences that enables the community to come together to be happy and healthy”

Future Mayer Park is a master plan collaboratively prepared by Darebin Council and a community group consisting of local Thornbury residents.

The master plan sets out a vision for Mayer Park, identifies elements of the park that require improvements, and provides clear actions to guide the implementation of these improvements over time and in future years.

Master Plan has been adopted!

At its Council Meeting on Monday 17 August 2020, Council adopted the Future Mayer Park Master Plan, following community consultation.

Thank you to everyone who provided feedback to help finalise the master plan.

Background

Significant community support and advocacy by local residents and users of the park combined with Council’s commitment to the Council Plan Darebin 2021 Goal 1.3(External link) has resulted in Council endorsing an innovative community-led design approach to create a master plan for Mayer Park in Thornbury.

Following an Expression of Interest period, Council resolved at its 30 April 2018 meeting to appoint eight community members to the Project Control Group (PCG) and endorsed the PCG Terms of Reference.

Since June 2018, the PCG have had over 20 meetings. In that time, the PCG have familiarised themselves with the site context, Council’s policies and demographic data, workshopped the Vision Statement, developed and led the engagement with the broader community, and summarised the engagement data, to inform the development of the draft master plan.

From October to December 2018, a community engagement process was conducted to gather feedback and comments from the wider community. This included:

  • having a stall at a Makers’ Market event held at Mayer Park
  • an interactive online survey
  • comment postcards distributed to approximately 4,000 households
  • electronic mail-outs to stakeholder groups
  • face-to-face meetings with key stakeholders
  • Facebook posts on the Friends of Mayer Park page
  • engagement activities and consultation milestones that were promoted on Council’s social media streams

Responses and comments were collated by the PCG and have informed the design principles and actions of the master plan.

Between 7 May and 8 June 2020, a final round of community consultation was conducted to seek feedback on the draft master plan. View the Community Engagement Summary report.
