A future focus for transport in Darebin

25 July 2022

Our newly updated Transport Strategy 2007-27 is our 20-year plan for improving transport in Darebin. The strategy aims to help you travel safely and sustainably to where you need to go.

Earlier this year we asked for your feedback on a refreshed plan, which included the wider community, local groups and transport experts.

Thanks to everyone for having their say – we had a great response to our online survey, with over 80% of people in support of refreshed plan. During the engagement we heard you were interested in:

  • Bike infrastructure, including new bike routes with designs that make riding safer
  • Walking environment, including requests for more pedestrian crossings
  • Public transport, such as improved services and affordability
  • Parking, including how to manage parking associated with new developments, enforcement and appropriate parking controls
  • Including e-Bikes and support for local bike journeys as important infrastructure priorities under ‘Infrastructure Planning’
  • Adding ‘sustainability’ and ‘accessible parking’ as important considerations when managing on-street parking under ‘Parking Management’
  • Including the Department of Transport’s ‘Movement and Place’ framework as an important reference document when managing the local street network under ‘Road Management’
  • Changing the wording of this action item to reference ‘perceptions of safety’ within Council’s design practices in ‘Community Safety’
  • Including of ‘micro-mobility’ and other emerging transport technologies as important considerations in ‘Future Transport Changes’:
  • Making minor updates to the Strategic Transport Framework Plan to reflect road hierarchy amendments for some streets, including Mahoney’s Road, Kingsbury Drive, Normanby Avenue, Arthurton Street and Merri Parade.
