For details on Darebin's Electric vehicle charging policy view our website

What is the policy?

Electric vehicles are an important tool on our fight against the climate emergency, and they’re becoming more popular in Australia every year.

We’re committed to supporting Darebin residents to own and use electric vehicles. One way we can do this is through an electric vehicle charging policy.

Our draft Electric Vehicle Charging Policy is a key output of the Darebin Transport Strategy Refresh.

The policy will provide certainty to property developers on our planning requirements for electric vehicle charging in new developments. It will also help us promote convenient charging options for all residents and visitors and expand our network of convenient electric vehicle charging stations across Darebin – making it easier to make the switch from petrol vehicles.

This survey closed on Sunday May 1st 2022.

The policy explained:

  • Part A

Sets out the expectations for electric vehicle charging infrastructure to be included in new developments.

If new developments are constructed with appropriate services to allow for electric vehicle chargers to be easily fitted, it will avoid the need for expensive and difficult retrofitting as demand for EV charging infrastructure increases.

  • Part B

Sets out how we will develop a network of public EV charging stations across Darebin.

This policy also addresses who will pay for the EV chargers, what locations might be appropriate, and what factors we will consider when deciding on charger locations.
