Thank you to everyone who provided feedback.
Darebin Council is working with our local hospitality businesses to actively support them in welcoming back customers into new outdoor settings. Council’s Extended Outdoor Dining Project aims to increase outdoor dining spaces in a COVID Safe, socially distanced environment.
This project has been designed to support hospitality venues safely expand outdoor dining areas into approved public spaces and operate within the health restrictions advised by the Victorian Government.
What’s happening now?
Applications to extend outdoor dining are being assessed on a case-by-case basis, taking into consideration amenity, safety and site-specific conditions such as impacts on residents, as well as the need to maintain social distancing and provide ease of access for pedestrians and essential vehicles. Council will continue to review the temporary permits as needed for safety and amenity.
Businesses wanting to apply for extended outdoor dining can find more information by visiting our website.
How will I be impacted by these temporary changes?
As part of this project, Council has worked in partnership with local businesses to install parklets - on-road car parking spaces that have been reallocated for outdoor dining use.
We want to ensure the community is aware of the parklets that are being installed within their area.
The map below contains a list of the parklets that Council has supported through the Extended Outdoor Dining Project. Click on the map below to see the businesses we have worked with so far.
How can I provide feedback?
We welcome feedback on what you think about these temporary measures and other locations you think we should consider parklets and activities. This feedback will help us to ensure that the temporary measures are a good fit for their environment and to inform Council’s future planning for the municipality.
You can leave feedback by dropping a pin on the map below or by calling our Customer Service team on 8470 8888 Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm.
Benjamin Street Trial Open Space
Thank you to all of our community members who provided feedback on the temporary Benjamin Street road closure.
This proposed open space will not go ahead. The main reason for this is because there are upcoming construction works in the area and bus routes will temporarily move to Benjamin Street.
We will continue to look for an alternative location for this kind of activity.

Duncan Street Trial Open Space
Darebin Council proposed a trial open space in Duncan Street Fairfield.
We sought feedback from businesses and community members and the period for consultation closed on Thursday 4 February, 2021.
Following the review of the feedback received, a decision has been made. Based on the feedback, we have decided not to go ahead with the temporary street closure.
