Council is happy to share the following recent improvements that have been made to the Edwardes Lake Park:

· Resurfacing of the skate park

· Widening of internal paths

· New park furniture including seats, picnic suites and bins

· A new public toilet and Changing Places facility near the Griffiths Street all abilities playspace.

Off-lead areas are being established by many local councils and are an important component of urban animal management due to increasing housing densities, resulting in more people living with their dogs in apartments or other homes without yards.

They provide the opportunity for dogs to exercise, socialise with other dogs, enjoy the fresh air, play games and generally race around and burn off energy. These activities are important for physical health, provide essential mental stimulation, and prevent the development of problem behaviours such as destructiveness or excessive barking. 

Off-lead dog areas are not suitable for all dogs. To ensure that you, your dog and others can safely enjoy the experience of an off-lead area, please consider:

• Off-lead areas are public areas that are not supervised by trained staff in a controlled    environment. This means the safety of both people and dogs depends on owners being    responsible.
• It is highly inadvisable to take your dog to an off-lead area until they have undergone  basic training.
• You need to be confident that your dog will reliably come to you when called. If you     feel unable to keep your dog under control, he or she is not ready for an off-lead           area.

As part of a review of the existing Edwardes Lake masterplan, Council completed two phases of community consultation in 2016/2017. A number of key improvements for the site were identified, including a dedicated off-lead dog area.

The location of the off-lead dog area near Seavers Grove is ideally located away from the main paths in the park, so dogs can remain separated from those using the park for other activities. This location is currently also used informally as a dog off-lead area already.

People are welcome to walk their dogs at Edwardes Lake Park, provided the dog is walked on-lead. The new dog area will give dog owners an opportunity to exercise/socialise their dogs in an off-lead environment. We have heard from our community that it can sometimes be scary or intimidating when dogs off-lead are sharing the same space as those who are walking or conducting other activities in the general park area. We are also aware of instances where dogs off-lead have attacked wildlife in the park. We want to make sure the park is an enjoyable space for all, including our wildlife, so having a designated off-lead area encourages dog owners to use that space, and keep their dogs on-lead when using the main park.

When visiting a dog-off lead area it is important that you:

• Carry a lead and poo bags.
• Have your dog in view and within 25 metres
• Can make the dog return to you immediately, on request
• Do not allow your dog cause an issue for other park users
• Keep your dog under control
• Do not allow the dog off-lead near our playspaces. 

Darebin has one fenced dog off-lead space at Bundoora Park. There are a total of 40 unfenced off-lead dog areas across Darebin in various parks and open spaces. Check out the list on Darebin’s website at www.darebin.vic.gov.au.

In early 2020, Council applied for a State Government grant via the Local Parks Program and was successful in securing $275,000 to construct a new dog off-lead area at Edwardes Lake Park, along Seaver Grove in Reservoir West. Darebin City Council acknowledges the support of the Victorian Government.
