Housing for everyone

Our Council Plan 2021-25 commits to facilitating more affordable, social and public housing in Darebin to meet our community’s needs. We're well on our way to achieving this.

The Council-owned land at 52-60 Townhall Avenue, Preston is an exciting opportunity for us to facilitate and action our response to the housing crisis.

Following extensive community engagement in 2018 and consideration of 309 submissions, we decided to lease the land at 52-60 Townhall Avenue for affordable housing. Read about the outcomes of this in our consultation report.

Housing Choices Australia was awarded funding to deliver a project on the site under the Victorian Government’s Social Housing Growth Fund. It ran a separate engagement process on proposed plans in late 2021.

What's happening now?

Works have started after Housing Choices Australia received planning approval from the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) in March 2022.

The residential development will include 39 one and two-bedroom apartments and support people in need of secure and affordable housing.
